Dear Dugoni School Family,

Administrative Professionals Day is being celebrated nationally on Wednesday, April 24. I encourage you to take a moment to thank and acknowledge the important role of the administrative professionals we are fortunate to have as part of the Dugoni School family.

We would not be as successful as we are without the dedication of our administrative assistants, office support specialists, receptionists, and others who help us deliver excellence across our departments. All areas of our school function better thanks to their talents.

Please join me in thanking the many members of the Dugoni School family who work to support our students, faculty, and patients today and every day throughout the year.

We recently received some exciting news about two Dugoni School alumni who were selected by the American Dental Association for a national award that honors dentists who are making an impact on the profession less than 10 years after graduating from dental school.

From more than 120 nominations, the ADA's New Dentist Committee selected Dr. Dan Hammer '11 and Dr. Brian Hathcoat '12 as part of its "10 Under 10" awards.

According to the ADA, the winners are driving dentistry forward and inspiring their colleagues through their work in science, research and education, practice excellence, philanthropy, leadership and advocacy.

We are proud of these two alums and all of the other young professionals who were nominated and recognized by the ADA. Learn more about the award on the ADA website.

As oral healthcare providers, we are on the front lines of helping to identify and prevent many diseases such as oral cancer. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, approximately 53,000 people in the United States will be newly diagnosed with oral cancer in 2019. The good news is that it can often be found early through a quick and painless head and neck screening. This is an important reminder to place great care and emphasis on this screening during the oral diagnosis and treatment planning of patients in our clinics. With early detection, survival rates are high, and the side effects from treatment are at their lowest.

April is recognized nationally as Oral Cancer Awareness Month. The Oral Cancer Foundation has a variety of educational resources online to help the public better understand oral cancer. Feel free to explore the resources at https://oralcancerfoundation.org/understanding/

In addition, the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance has designated April 7-16 as Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week. You can learn more about that initiative at https://www.headandneck.org/ohancaw.

In April and during every other month of the year, we are in a unique position to perform screenings and educate our patients in order to help people lead healthy lives.

Addendum:
Some cases of oral cancer are linked to a common virus called human papilloma virus (HPV). There is a vaccine available against the HPV virus. For more information, visit https://oralcancerfoundation.org/understanding/hpv/hpv-oral-cancer-facts/

Dear Dugoni School Family,

As we recognize and celebrate the various traditions within our diverse school community, I would like to wish you a happy Nowruz — the Persian New Year. This “new day” is celebrated by millions of people around the world on the day of the vernal equinox, marking the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

I wish you the very best during this time of renewal and new beginnings.
