This Saturday, February 13, we are pleased to be able to offer COVID-19 vaccines to San Francisco Fire Department first responders and public health workers with the San Francisco Department of Public Health. It is a privilege to provide this wonderful service to our community.

Also, if you have friends, family, or neighbors who work as first responders (police, fire and EMTs), a reminder that our Orthodontic Clinic is offering a 20% discount on orthodontic treatment for first responders and their family members. Learn more by emailing ortho@pacific.edu or calling 415.929.6555.

We have enjoyed nearly 125 years of service to our community and I am proud to see the University of the Pacific, Dugoni School continuing as a strong partner in health and wellness.

National Children's Dental Health Month

This year, National Children’s Dental Health Month turns 80 and is still going strong as a national health promotion. This year’s theme is “Water: Nature’s Drink.” The observance was made official by a presidential proclamation by Harry S. Truman in 1950. For 2021, most of the events around the country will be virtual, but there are still opportunities to get involved, share information, and reach children and families with messages about health. You may learn more on the ADA website.

Good Friday morning and I hope you have had a safe and productive week.

This afternoon, we continue one of our long-standing traditions at the Dugoni School. The Asilomar Virtual Conference will be held for the DDS, IDS, and Dental Hygiene Classes of 2021.

We are looking forward to the program, slideshow video, guest speaker Mr. John Beede — Everest climber, global adventurer, entrepreneur, author and humanitarian — and other virtual activities. This will be the 53rd annual Asilomar gathering, and although we could not hold it on the Monterey Peninsula, we are still excited that we can continue the tradition of gathering together.

Thank you to the nearly 170 people who participated in our COVID-19 vaccine clinic on campus yesterday, either by getting the vaccine or by volunteering. We were also able to vaccinate members of dental teams and other health care providers who work in San Francisco referred to us by the San Francisco Dental Society and Department of Public Health.  It was wonderful to see more potentially lifesaving vaccines being administered by members of our Dugoni School family.

You may also have heard that the Moscone Convention Center is opening as a mass vaccination hub for members of the public who qualify for vaccines. Frontline healthcare workers and those age 65 and over who live and work in San Francisco qualify. Learn more and book an appointment.

As our collective fight against this virus continues, it is good to have additional tools at our disposal including the pending review of another vaccine by Johnson and Johnson on February 26 by an independent scientific review board.

Be well and enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend, and a remember to stay safe and healthy.

We will all have stories to tell in the future about how we adapted and learned from the challenges presented by the pandemic over the last 10+ months.

As a school, we will be collecting those stories and will look to create a special collection of materials and memories so that we — and future generations — will have a record to look back on. Please stay tuned as that effort gets underway.

The American Dental Association is also collecting stories. The ADA is launching the JADA+ COVID-19 Monograph — a digital collection of stories, reflections, and accounts from any perspective, in any format, including articles, essays, podcasts, videos, graphics and photos—that is open to all contributors, including dental students and practitioners.

Our school will be submitting materials to the ADA COVID-19 Monograph. However, I also wanted to call your attention to it in case you would like to submit your own personal story. Learn more here.

One of our most recent success stories is the collaboration to launch the COVID-19 vaccine clinic last weekend.

I had the opportunity to be interviewed by KRON4 last Friday to help tell our story. I was honored to share the good work that students, faculty, staff, and alumni of the Dugoni School family were doing to launch our first vaccine clinic. Watch the interview below.
