Dear Dugoni School Family,

As Thanksgiving approaches, please know how thankful I am to have each of you as part of our school family. All of our wonderful students, residents, faculty, staff, and alumni play a key part in fulfilling our purpose of helping people lead healthy lives.

Enjoy your time with friends and family over the upcoming holiday weekend. For those of you who will be coming to the school’s Thanksgiving meal on Thursday, we are glad you will be together on the holiday.

This week is also a great opportunity for us to show appreciation for the special people who have impacted our lives and to pause and take note of all of the good and positive things in our world.

Thank you…I am inspired by how much you give to the school, our community, and the profession.

I would like to take a moment to wish each and every one of you happy and safe holidays. I recognize that this is a very busy time of the year. Much is happening to wrap up the academic year, not to mention all of the holiday-related preparations and activities. I hope that the upcoming break offers you a chance to relax, reenergize, and spend special time with family and friends. Pacific Dugoni is a unique family of students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, patients, and friends. Our collective impact on the world is significant thanks to all of your efforts.

2013 was an extraordinary year in the history of Pacific Dugoni. You have completed many of the significant tasks that we embarked upon when we set up the strategic plan Advancing Greatness. Several months ago, I sent you a partial list of all your accomplishments. It is extraordinary. You have contributed so much to Pacific Dugoni’s legacy.

2014 will be another major milestone for us. Thank you for all the hard work that you are doing in preparing our new home. I know it is always a challenge to move from a place where we have fond memories, but in our new home, we will build on those memories and create new ones.

I know there will be a lot of work for every one of you during the coming six months. Please accept my deepest appreciation for all that you have done. Your contributions and commitment to our vision and leading the improvement of health by advancing oral health is commendable. We have much to celebrate and much to look forward to in the new year.

Happy holidays!

There is a saying that the true test of character is how a person behaves when no one is looking. What action do they take without an audience? It might be picking up a piece of trash in the school hallway when no one else is around. Or dropping off cans of food or a toy to a charity collection bin. Or holding a door open for someone you don’t know and will never meet again.

In a broader sense, the way we give back to the community also shows a bit about our character, especially when no one is looking. During the holiday season, so many of us are asked to give of our time, talents and treasury to organizations and causes. How do we respond?

It is always heartwarming to hear from our students, faculty and alumni who volunteer for many causes within the world of dentistry and outside of it. We even have students and faculty members who volunteer over their breaks to go on humanitarian dentistry trips to help underserved families overseas. I would like to thank these volunteers who give their time and talent without seeking applause or acknowledgement from others. This is in contrast with some celebrities, corporate representatives and politicians we occasionally see on TV who are all about the cameras and the publicity.

At Pacific Dugoni, we are fortunate to have many opportunities to give back to the community. Some of these opportunities are initiated by students, and others are organized by staff or faculty members. In many ways, the Season of Giving around our school extends far into the New Year and beyond.

In whatever way you give back, I encourage you to keep in mind the spirit of the cause and the good work you are doing in and of itself.
