Completing the first half of our dental program is a big accomplishment and our second-year DDS and IDS students organized an “Over the Hump” party to celebrate. The Class of 2020 students hosted a successful bash open to all students, faculty and staff at The Argonaut Hotel in San Francisco on Feb. 2. The night featured food, dancing and awards.
The Dr. Thomas R. Bales Family Endowment Good Samaritan Award is announced during this annual celebration. It recognizes a second-year student for demonstrating exemplary kindness to fellow classmates throughout the first half of the program. Dugoni School of Dentistry alumnus and benefactor Dr. Thomas R. Bales established the award in 2004 to honor a student who provided inspiration and a sense of purpose to his or her fellow first-year classmates.
This year’s winner and recipient of a plague and a check for $5,000 was Marwa Elkharsity.
Congratulations to Marwa and to the Class of 2020 on making it over the hump!
Holiday festivities of all sorts are bringing warmth and seasonal cheer to the school throughout the month. Among the activities was a recent gathering to celebrate Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. Dean Nadershahi, faculty, staff, students, family members and alumni enjoyed a night of music and dance performances as well as Indian delicacies. Guests also enjoyed the henna and photo booth. The Diwali celebration was organized by the IDS 2020 class with support from the ASDA chapter, Associated Student Body and the Alumni Association.
The American Association of Women Dentists (AAWD) honored the Dugoni School’s AAWD chapter with the Student Chapter of the Year award during their annual conference. The award recognizes chapters who have connected in a meaningful way with AAWD while supporting their goal and mission.
During the past year, the Pacific Chapter organized 16 events, raised more than $600 for its chapter, and donated over $1,000 to nonprofit organizations and charities. AAWD supported organizations such as Take Back the Night, Because Justice Matters, Habitat for Humanity and Napa Fire Victims, San Francisco Women's March, and Watermark Conference for Women-Silicon Valley. They have expanded opportunities for leadership and mentorship not only among female dental students, but for the dental school community as a whole.
